Opening Day in any sport is a big deal; a new season slated with surprise stories, superstars, and roller coaster rides gets under way on that first game of the season. For baseball, however, Opening Day is even more thrilling and exciting than most other sports. Baseball is an extremely long season; 162 games to be exact, not including the playoffs. This certainly paves the way for success stories, but also busts. Just like every other year, Opening Day 2011 is just the start of another incredible baseball season.

Opening Day baseball games are absolutely majestic. The offseason anticipation is coming to an end and making way for post-season anticipation. The environment surrounding that of an Opening Day baseball game for your favorite team sends shivers down the spine and goose bumps to every square inch of your skin. Whether you are alone, with friends, or with the family, Opening Day is sure to not disappoint. Even if you are unable to make it to a game, a true baseball fan is just as excited for the day as anyone else. With baseball chatter in the air, there is nothing better than waiting for your favorite teams very first pitch.

The year 2012 will see the Olympic games return to London for the first time since 1908. The games will take place in venues both new, such as the London Olympic Stadium, as well as historic, such as Wembley Stadium. The city has been busily preparing buildings, and public transportation for the huge influx of spectators that is expected. The city has been rapidly preparing for the game since winning the bid in December of 2005.

Many of the events will be held at the newly built London Olympic Stadium. The 80,000 seat stadium is the center piece of the London Olympic Game. Building on the stadium began in May of 2008, and the project was finished by March of 2011. 25,000 of the stadium’s seating is permanent, with a bowl like structure providing an additional 55,000 seats for the games.

This will be the second time that London has hosted the Olympic games. The first time was in 1908 when a timely eruption of Mount Vesuvius caused the games to be moved from Milan to London.

The 1908 games featured competitors from 22 different Olympic Committees The 2012 games, by comparison, will host competitors from over 200 separate National Olympic Committees.

The football season isn’t even under way yet and many fans are already looking forward to the next Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the annual crowning of the best team in the National Football League and takes place in a different location each and every year. In most cases the Super Bowl is held in warm weather locations since it is played in the winter months, but there are time when it is hosted in a cold weather city if that city has a domed stadium to play the game in.

Super Bowl 46 will be hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana. Indiana is a cold weather city with a domed stadium and artificial turf. The NFL team the Indianapolis Colts play their home games in this stadium. The game will be held on February 5, 2012 in Lucas Oil Stadium. Super Bowl 46 will be the first Super Bowl ever hosted in the city of Indianapolis. Tickets for the game can be purchased already and prices for the tickets depend on where you want to sit in th stadium. If a person does plan on attending the game, they should also book their hotel rooms well in advance of the game.

What better way to ring in the New Year than celebrating with fellow collegiate students, alumni and fans with a neutral site city full of nightlife as your proverbial playground? The Bowl Championship Series allows for followers of 10 high-performing programs to enjoy themselves at the most elite levels, with every .500 or better squad eligible for bowl competition in some capacity. The BCS bowls, however, are exalted above the rest, rewarding conference champions and high ranking qualifiers by pitting them against one another in blood-pumping showdowns. The 2011 lineup looks to be promising as always, with tickets already on sale for the following matchups:January 1st5:00 p.m. Pasadena, California Rose Bowl Big 12 co-Champion and tie breaker winner Wisconsin matches up against an undefeated Texas Christian team, testing the Horned Frogs’ mettle against the upper level of auto-qualifier competition. TCU will be out to prove it belongs among the top tier of programs in the country, slighted by the BCS Championship Game due to strength of schedule, overriding its perfect regular season mark.8:30 p.m. Glendale, Arizona Fiesta Bowl Someone had to come out of the Big East, sending UConn, the least qualified of all BCS participants with a record 4 losses, into a David vs. Goliath matchup against the Big 12 Champion Oklahoma Sooners. The Huskies have reason to hope for the upset against the Sooners, however, as Oklahoma has struggled in bowl games of late, losing 5 of their last 7, without a BCS bowl win since the 2002 Rose Bowl. January 3rd8:30 p.m. Miami, Florida Orange Bowl Virginia Tech has rallied after two early season losses to win the ACC crown, going unbeaten over the remaining course of the schedule, earning a matchup with Pac-10 runner-up and 4 BCS ranked Stanford. The Cardinal have been the surprise of the season, suffering just an on the road loss to 1 ranked Oregon as their lone blemish in 2010.January 4th8:30 p.m. New Orleans, Louisiana Sugar Bowl Fellow Big 10 co-Champion Ohio State will meet SEC at-large qualifier Arkansas in a matchup of two former top notch quarterback recruits, Tyrelle Prior of (OSU) and Ryan Mallet (Arkansas). January 10th 8:30 p.m. Glendale, Arizona BCS National Championship In a matchup of unbeatens that has been brewing atop the poll for months now, Heisman frontrunner Cam Newton leads SEC champion Auburn up against fellow Heisman hopeful LaMichael James and the Pac-10 champion Oregon Ducks. As always, winner takes home bragging rights as the premier college football school in the country for the 2010 season.

With only a few weeks left in the 2009-2010 baseball season, only 4 teams remain with hopes still alive at taking hope the World Series trophy. The American League Championship series begins tonight, pitting the defending champion New York Yankees against the upstart Texas Rangers, fresh off their first postseason series win in franchise history. The Yankees are led by some of the same familiar faces who propelled their dynasty throughout the late 90′s, including Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettite. Adding some thump to the heart of the order is the Rangers onetime highest paid player Alex Rodriguez, still one of the most feared hitters in the league. Texas is led by midseason acquisition ace Cliff Lee, bolstered by a battalion of bats, namely Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz, two of the best batting and base stealing combo threats in baseball when healthy. On the NL side of the Championship Series divide, the Phillies and Giants square off in an intriguing matchup of all-star pitching staffs. Tomorrow night’s game pits arguably to the two premiere pitchers in the world against one another in Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum. Halladay is coming off only the second no-hitter in post season history, while Lincecum last posted a 2-hit, shutout effort of his own. Following Halladay in the rotation is seasoned vet Roy Oswalt, whose arm seems to have fallen into the fountain of youth in the offseason. Number 3 man Cole Hamels could easily headline a host of other rotations in the Majors. Lincecum is backed up by young gunners Matt Cain and Madison Baumgarner. Cain is an All-Star in his own right at just 26, while Baumgarner is finishing off a fine season after a mid-season call up, starting the NLDS clinching game against the Braves earlier in the week. The 21 year old has pitched with the poise of a veteran early in his career, sporting just a 2.90 cumulative ERA.The Yankees and Rangers will meet on the 15th, 16th, 18th and 19th, with additional games on the 20th, 22nd and 23rd if necessary. The Phillies and Giants are scheduled for the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th, with additional games on the 21st, 23rd and 24th if necessary.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the famous Indianapolis 500 in late May, will feature its annual NASCAR race as part of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series on July 25th. The Brickyard 400, restoring its original title this year after a 5 year stint as the “Allstate 400 at the Brickyard,” takes its name from the historic track, originally paved in brick back in 1909 and still sporting a one-yard brick strip across the start/finish line. The original Brickyard 400, held in 1994, boasted the largest crowd in NASCAR history to date, playing off the popularity of motor sports in the Indianapolis area. Jeff Gordon took home the inaugural checkered flag in what was only his second year on the circuit. When Dale Jarrett won the race in 1996, he kissed the bricks at the start/finish line, now an Indy 500 tradition that actually began at the Brickyard 400. The large facility and race-loving culture of the Hoosier State has allowed the annual race to survive and thrive for 15 years, showcasing NASCAR drivers on one of racing’s most esteemed stages.Recent Brickyard 400s have been historic in their own right, marking monumental occasions for individual NASCAR drivers, the race and the track itself. In 2007, during his rookie year of Sprint Competition, Juan Pablo Montoya became the first driver to take home the title at all three major events hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (the Indy 500, the Brickyard 400 and the U.S. Grand Prix). Jimmy Johnson made history in last year’s race becoming the first driver in to win the Brickyard 400 in back to back years and only the second ever three time champion, winning 3 of the last 4.This year, Johnson should face tough competition from points-leader Kevin Harvick, two time winner Tony Stewart and the race’s winningest driver Jeff Gordon, among others, as he tries to become the first driver ever to win 3 consecutive Brickyard 400s.

The Tour de France, known as Le Tour or Le Grande Boucle in its native country, will finish its final stage on July 25, culminating with its famous final stretch along the Champs-Elysees in Paris, France. In what may surprise most sports fans, 15 million people attend the bicycle road race, giving it the 3rd largest in-person viewership among sporting events, behind only the Olympics and the World Cup. The Tour de France is second to none in cumulative attendance among events held annually. This year’s Tour is particularly significant as the all time winningest Tour de France cyclist, American Lance Armstrong, has announced it will be the final year he competes in the sports most fabled race. Armstrong is a 7 time winner, trying to improve on his already record holding mark with an 8th yellow jersey finish this year. For years he was simply unbeatable, winning an unprecedented 7 consecutive Tour de France titles from 1999 to 2005, a feat made even more impressive considering it was on the heels of his battle with cancer in 1998.Like legends in other sports before him, Armstrong has already retired once, announcing his retirement after the 7th victory, only to come back and make a run at last year’s Tour. He did indeed work his way back into Tour competition shape, finishing 3rd overall, just under 5 and a half minutes behind victor and Astana teammate, Spaniard Alberto Contador. Now racing with Team RadioShack, Armstrong is 38 years old and 5 years removed from his last yellow jersey, hardly a safe bet to extend his record to 8. Of course, the betting man should always be cautioned towards betting against Lance Armstrong. Cantador, who is still just 27 years old, is the early favorite to defend his 2009 Tour victory a make a run at the 2010 title.

Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California will play host to its third All-Star Game come July 13, and its first since 1989. In what should be another gripping test of skill between the National League’s and American League’s best, the Angels home to feature a few of their own hometown heroes on the American League squad. Leading the way for the Angels, who look to take a second place AL West stand into the mid-season clubhouse, is starting pitcher Jered Weaver, sporting the team’s best ERA, WHIP and strikeout totals, who hopes to make his first All-Star appearance. On the other side of the ball, center fielder Torii Hunter, a 3 time All-Star already, has been a bright spot in the Angels’ lineup this season, tops in both batting average and RBI, and should make a push for his fourth selection.Recent Midsummer Classics have been overwhelmingly dominated by the American League, winning 12 of the last 13 contests dating back to 1996, with the lone exception of the controversial tie ruling in 2002. After the infamous draw, a 2003 rule entitled the winning side to home field advantage in the World Series, upping the stakes for participants across major league baseball (except of course in cities like Kansas City and Pittsburgh). While the AL has enjoyed overwhelming All-Star success and home field advantage in every series since the rule change, World Series victories have been split almost evenly with a slight AL edge at 4-3.The weekends’ festivities are not limited to the game itself. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the All-Star Fanfest, open from July 9 to July 13 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Featuring interactive games, the chance to meet current baseball players and legends, memorabilia, historic exhibits and more, Fanfest is a yearly favorite for baseball fans of all ages. Events at Angel Stadium kick off on July 11 with the Futures Game, the Legends & Celebrity Softball Game. The Futures Game offers a look at some of baseball’s hottest young prospects while the Legends Game gives younger fans a chance to see the game’s greats take the field in person, along with popular public figures. The night before the game the State Farm Home Run Derby pits the League’s top sluggers against one another in the much hyped annual competition.
